Frown lines, called glabellar lines, are the result of repeated muscle movement over the years. To cause a frown, certain muscles contract, causing the skin over them to pleat, or wrinkle. Gradually the wrinkles become more pronounced and lasting, remaining there even when the muscles are not contracted.
Over the years, we develop facial habits, and become unaware of using facial muscles. In the case of frowning, it does not necessarily happen only when a person is angry. It can happen automatically in bright light, or when sneezing or coughing. But the long-term effect of repeated contracting of the frown muscles is a displeased or worried look.

What is BOTOX®?
The full name is BOTOX® Cosmetic. It is a purified protein from the clostridium botulinum bacterium. It prevents the muscles from contracting, thus preventing frown lines from being reasserted, or repeated, during the months that the treatment lasts. This keeps the forehead smoother, and dramatically reduces the worried or displeased look that frown might have given you before. It is not an injectable filler like Restylane or Radiesse.
It has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of frown lines.
