Dr. Carter cannot recommend CustomVue without a thorough eye consultation. To be a good candidate, you should:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have the desire to trade in glasses or contacts for clear, natural vision
- Have a minimum corneal thickness to ensure safety and good results
What is my personal best vision?
Your personal best vision is the level of visual acuity you are able to reach with the CustomVue LASIK procedure. Because everyone’s eyes are different, your personal best vision may differ slightly from another’s with this completely customized procedure.
Personal best vision also refers to the finely tuned level of measuring and correcting that occurs with the Wavefront System.
How does the Wavefront System promote better vision results during the CustomVue procedure?
Using WaveScan analysis to create the 3-dimensional Wavefront map allows Dr. Carter to measure even the most minute optical imperfections.
In traditional LASIK, without Wavefront, these imperfections were hidden and unable to be corrected. Now, the Wavefront map feeds the information directly to the VISX laser, programming it to precisely target your unique vision difficulties. The result is your personal best vision!

What happens on the day of my CustomVue LASIK procedure?
- We ask you to arrive at Carter Eye Center 30 minutes before the appointment time for your procedure. One of our highly trained technicians will stay with you throughout your entire experience.
- You should also bring a family member or friend. With your approval, they will be able to view your procedure as it happens.
- On the morning of your procedure you may eat a normal meal.
- Once you arrive, your LASIK technician will greet you and take you through the entire process.
- Our patients choose to take mild sedation so they can be more relaxed during the procedure and to help them nap afterwards. Your LASIK technician will then escort you to the laser suite.
- The procedure itself is essentially painless and most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision right away.
- After the procedure you will be advised to go home and take a nap and most of our patients wake up feeling little or no discomfort.
- [The whole process takes approximately two hours.] A clear protective eye shield will cover each eye that has been treated until the next morning.
- Most patients notice a significant improvement in their vision the next day, and without the need for glasses, drive themselves in for their initial post-op exam.
