How does IntraLASIK differ from traditional LASIK?
Before the excimer laser reshapes the cornea to improve vision, your doctor must create a corneal flap, a fine layer of corneal cells that is lifted and folded back out of the way.
Most LASIK surgeons use a hand-held fine blade called a microkeratome.
IntraLASIK uses a second, high-speed laser to make this corneal flap. The IntraLASIK laser can make a thinner flap than the microkeratome, thus enabling more people, with thinner corneas to take advantage of LASIK eye surgery.
Dr. Carter offers both the IntraLASIK and the microkeratome methods to ensure the right option for each LASIK patient.
What additional benefits does IntraLasik provide?
In some circumstances the IntraLASIK gives Dr. Carter even greater control in creating the corneal flap than the hand-held microkeratome.
Some people who have thinner corneas and were unable to have LASIK eye surgery before can now have the procedure using the IntraLASIK technique (or with another bladeless procedure called LASEK), because this laser can create an even thinner corneal flap than the microkeratome. Another option for people with thin corneas involves the replacement of the eye’s natural lens with an advanced Intraocular lens similar to those used for cataract surgery.
Does IntraLASIK promote safety?
The IntraLASIK laser has reduced some of the complications of LASIK, on the other hand, it has in some cases caused extra eye irritation and light sensitivity after the procedure. These complications usually prove to be temporary, however.
Any definitive statements about the relative safety records of IntraLASIK vs. the microkeratome for LASIK surgery will need to wait until more time has passed and more studies have been performed.
At Carter Eye Center, we believe LASIK eye surgery should be customized for each patient. We therefore offer both the IntraLASIK technique and the microkeratome method.
