Should I choose LASIK or LASEK for vision correction?
- Both procedures are considered highly effective and utilize state-of-the-art vision correction technology, including the VISX Star S4 laser.
- LASEK offers you another shot at vision correction if you’re outside the traditional treatment scope of LASIK
- Some people who may be good LASIK candidates simply prefer the features LASEK has to offer.
If you’re nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic, you may have the luxury of choosing LASIK or LASEK. Dr. Carter will let you know which procedure he thinks will give you the best results.
How does LASEK compare with LASIK?
Although both procedures are highly successful and produce impressive vision results, Dr. Carter may recommend one over the other depending on your needs.
- LASEK essentially avoids potential complications related to flap creation and healing.
- Vision recovery and overall healing time are slower with LASEK than with LASIK.
Does LASEK eliminate the risk of corneal haze?
Yes, usually. In PRK, the top layer of corneal cells is completely removed, and corneal haze is a side effect of that.
- The cornea reacts to the movement of cells in the inner cornea, by forming white cells, as a sort of protection against what it sees as a wound.
- These white cells can impede vision.
- Although temporary, corneal haze can be difficult for some patients to deal with.
Because with LASEK Dr. Carter only moves the epithelium to the side, then replaces it, the cornea isn’t stimulated to produce those white cells.

Generally, LASEK may be recommended if you:
- Have thin or steep corneas (making flap creation difficult)
- Might have predictably better results with LASEK
- Participate in contact sports
- Wish to avoid the potential risks that accompany the flap creation step.
What can I expect after my LASEK procedure?
- Following your LASEK treatment, Dr. Carter will place a thin bandage contact lens for healing purposes, to be worn for a few days.
- While clear vision may not return instantly as after LASIK, you should have functional vision within 3 – 5 days.
- You may experience discomfort within the first 2 days, which can be managed with pain medication.
Dr. Carter will take the time to explain every possibility in detail before your LASEK procedure.
