The Visian ICL: LASIK Alternative for Young Adults
LASIK In Dallas, Texas
If you would like to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, you may have looked into having LASIK. Not everybody is a good candidate for LASIK, but there are other ways of achieving your clearest vision.
The Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer® Lens) is a kind of artificial lens that can be placed in the eye without removing the natural lens. It is like a contact lens that you never have to clean or replace and it can give you clear vision at all distances. It is made by the STAAR Surgical Company, a manufacturer of many ophthalmological devices, and is FDA-approved for treating nearsightedness.
How the Visian ICL Works
The Visian ICL is placed in front the eye's natural lens and modifies the way the lens refracts (bends) light entering the eye. If you are nearsighted, the eye is bending light too much for the length of the eye (front to back). This means that images are focusing in front of the retina instead of clearly on it. The retina is the inside back surface of the eye and acts like the eye's camera film, receiving images and sending them to the brain for interpretation.
With a Visian ICL in place, incoming light will be bent less sharply and images will focus clearly on the retina. In some cases a person may still need glasses or contacts after the Visian ICL procedure.
Am I a Good Candidate for the Visian ICL?
If you are between the ages of 21 and about 45 and are nearsighted, you may well be a good candidate. The Visian ICL can treat mild, moderate and severe nearsightedness.
The procedure is best done for people who have not had any previous eye surgery, and you would need to be free of any eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma. A healthy young person with little or no astigmatism is most likely an excellent candidate. Dr. Carter will examine your eyes and discuss the Visian ICL option with you.
Visian ICL Advantages
You will not feel the Visian ICL in your eye, and others will not be able to see it. The only people who will know you have had any vision correction will be you and your eye surgeon.
The material used in making the Visian ICL does not cause any reaction in the body. It contains an ultraviolet blocker that will help protect your eyes from the sun's UV rays.
If your vision changes later on, Dr. Carter can remove the Visian ICL and replace it with one that will correct your changed vision.
