Meet Dr. Varghese of the Carter Eye Center Family

March is Women’s History Month, highlighting the contributions of women to events both in history and in contemporary society. At Carter Eye Center, we’d like to take this time to shine a spotlight on our own Dr. Ashley Varghese. A valuable member of our clinical team, Dr. Varghese, a licensed optometrist, is well-loved by her patients, not to mention the rest of us here at Carter Eye Center!

After completing her undergraduate work at the University of Texas Arlington, Dr. Varghese graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2017 and joined the Carter Eye Center family in 2020. Let’s get to know Dr. Varghese a little better!

How did you decide to become an optometrist?

I grew up in a traditional Indian household. My parents moved here from India, and they always pushed my brother and I to work hard and to do the very best that we could do. I ventured forth from that upbringing and decided I wanted to go into the medical field. After shadowing an optometrist, it really sparked an interest for me. During college, I worked as a technician in an optometry practice, and that really solidified that this was the field for me.

What does a typical day at the office look like for you?

Mornings are busy, and that’s when I see post-op LASIK and cataract surgery patients. Then I meet with patients who are considering LASIK for their refractive workups, and in the afternoon, I see patients for eye exams, dry eye and other issues like glaucoma. I really love that I get a lot of variety in my day and get to work with all kinds of patients.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I really do love problem solving for patients who come in with a medical complaint and then finding the best solution while providing the highest level of treatment. Generally, I work in a very happy field; meaning we get to help people restore or improve their vision and their lives. I love it!

What do you enjoy about being a part of the Carter Eye Center team?

Dr. Carter is a real mentor to me, which I really appreciate. Any time he sees a learning opportunity for me, he brings me in. The entire team is very collaborative and really works to grow in our skills and support each other while providing the best patient experience we can.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I love traveling, and can’t wait until we can start doing that again! I also enjoy working out and playing basketball and volleyball. I am a foodie, and love to meet my friends for dinner and drinks.
