Not a Candidate? Not a Problem
Even if you’re not an ideal candidate for LASIK, there’s no need to worry! At Carter Eye Center, we have several other vision-correcting options for improved vision with reduced dependency on glasses or contacts.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) treats nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. PRK was developed before LASIK, but is still commonly used to help patients who want great vision but have very thin corneas.
With PRK, there is no flap creation. Instead, the top layer of corneal cells (epithelium) is removed altogether. This is called surface ablation. The laser is focused directly on the corneal surface. Healing and visual recovery take a little longer after PRK than with LASIK. Both procedures enjoy a very favorable success rate.
LASEK is a blade-free vision correction procedure. LASEK essentially combines the principles of PRK and LASIK for a vision correction alternative with many advantages for those who may not be ideal candidates for other procedures. LASEK stands for Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis. It’s a surface ablation technique, similar to PRK, but is designed for:
- Quicker healing
- Faster visual recovery
- Reduced discomfort
Instead of removing the epithelium or corneal surface, as is done with PRK, the LASEK procedure applies an alcohol solution to the epithelium to loosen the cells and access the treatment area. The cool-light laser is then applied to reshape the cornea in order to correct your vision.
The Visian ICL, also known as the Implantable Collamer® Lens, is a type of refractive procedure to help correct the most common visual problem, myopia. Simply put, Visian ICL is a removable lens implant that is an alternative to LASIK and other refractive procedures.
The procedure uses a Collamer (collagen-based) lens and does not require the removal of your eye’s natural lens, maintaining your natural, up-close focusing ability. The Visian ICL is inserted through a tiny incision and carefully positioned behind the iris and in front of your natural lens. Once implanted, the Visian ICL is only visible with a microscope. It is almost like wearing a contact on the front surface of the cornea.
This FDA-approved procedure is safe and reversible; the Visian ICL can be removed or replaced at any time. And unlike traditional contact lenses, these implanted lenses never need to be removed for cleaning.
If you’d like to know more about any of these LASIK alternatives, please contact us at Carter Eye Center. We’ll be happy to answer your questions and work with you to see which vision-correcting procedure is right for you.
